Isn’t growing vegan food bad for the rain forests and the environment?

May 8, 2013

First of all, it isn’t ‘vegan’ food.  It is the same food all of us eat, whether we are vegan or not.

The clearing away of rain forests is done to create pasture for animals to graze in and to grow grain to feed them.  Since 1970, 91% of all deforestation in the Amazon is due to raising cows and growing crops to feed them.

Again, that is 91%.

In the United States the U.S. Department of Agriculture states that more than half of all crops grown are for animal feed. These animals are fed over 157 million tons and yet only produce 28 million tons of animal as food.

Chemicals should not be used when growing crops.  Billions of pounds are dumped onto crops grown to feed animals each year according to the Environmental Protection Agency of the United States.
